SAIC-Volkswagen ID. Era 9X Brings Screens, AI, And Lounge-Style Cabin

When Volkswagen first revealed the ID. Era 9X earlier this year, it was obvious the SUV was built with a different crowd in mind. Developed through the SAIC-Volkswagen partnership, the model is aimed squarely at the Chinese market, where buyers increasingly expect their cars to feel as modern and connected as the smartphones they use every day.
Now the company has revealed the interior, and it shows just how far Volkswagen is willing to go with technology in this model. The design mixes simple European styling with elements that appeal to Chinese buyers, who tend to favor bigger screens and more digital features.

The dashboard and center console appear to float within the cabin, giving the whole space a lighter, lounge-like feel. Ambient lighting runs throughout the interior, stretching more than 12 meters and softly illuminating the cabin.
Screens are clearly the centerpiece. Two 15.6-inch displays sit across the dashboard, one for the driver and one for the front passenger. Instead of everything being focused only on the driver, the system encourages both people in the front seats to interact with it. Rear passengers are not left out either, thanks to a large 21.4-inch screen that folds down from the ceiling and turns the back seats into a mini entertainment space.

Technology goes beyond displays. The SUV features an AI-based cockpit that supports voice interaction and can respond to different situations inside the car. Its navigation-assisted driving system can also handle highway and city routes without relying on pre-mapped roads.
The Era 9X also reflects a bigger shift inside Volkswagen. In markets like the United States, the company is taking a more cautious approach as demand for electric cars changes. China is moving much faster, with buyers expecting advanced technology and electrified powertrains. Because of that, Volkswagen is developing vehicles there that push digital features further than many of its global models.

Ultimately, the ID. Era 9X feels like Volkswagen’s way of showing how far it can push technology when the market demands it, and right now, China is the place where that demand is strongest.
