Acura Built an NSX-Worthy Sports Car, Then Said You Can’t Buy It

Acura has built a sports car that looks ready to steal the spotlight from the NSX, then immediately told us we can’t buy it. That may be the most frustrating part of the Nexera Vision, a dramatic two-seat concept that gives us a glimpse at where Acura wants to take its designs next.

The Nexera Vision made its debut during Monterey Car Week as part of Acura’s 40th-anniversary celebrations. While the concept won’t enter production, Acura plans to carry some of its ideas into future models, including the next-generation RDX Hybrid.

The design starts with classic sports-car proportions. A long hood stretches toward a low, sharp nose, while the wide stance gives the car plenty of visual aggression. Acura finished the body in Matte Titanium, which highlights the clean surfaces and long distance between the front axle and windshield.

The headlights and taillights provide one of the biggest surprises. Acura hides both sets of LEDs inside the bodywork, then reveals them when the driver switches them on. Their V-shaped signature takes inspiration from the Acura logo, and the company plans to bring the look to production cars soon.

The next RDX Hybrid will lead that change. Acura already previewed the lighting on the hybrid SUV prototype earlier this year.

The Nexera also packs plenty of exotic-car hardware. Large butterfly doors open the cabin, while aerodynamic channels cut through the nose. An active rear spoiler helps manage airflow, and forged carbon features throughout the body keep the concept looking light and technical.

Huge 22-inch center-lock wheels complete the stance. Acura gives them a directional 3D design and combines their matte anodized finish with forged-carbon inserts. Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes sit behind the wheels.

Inside, Acura takes a surprisingly restrained approach. A curved digital instrument display sits behind a yoke-style steering wheel, while the lack of a giant central touchscreen keeps the cabin focused on driving. The design team also drew inspiration from the Honda S2000.

Acura wanted the driver to sit as low as possible, so it fixed the bucket seats directly to the floor. Instead of moving the seat, the driver adjusts the steering wheel and pedal box to find the right position.

The cabin mixes black and white materials with pink accents. Acura also uses several lower-impact materials, including CircuLeather upholstery, Alcantara made from recycled polyester, recycled aluminum, and forged carbon.

Acura Design California in Los Angeles created the Nexera Vision. The company hasn’t revealed its powertrain, but the proportions and packaging strongly suggest an electric setup.

The concept appeared at The Quail on August 14 and will head to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Lawn on August 16. Acura says it has no production plans for the Nexera, although the company wants to carry its design ideas into future vehicles.

That leaves Acura fans with one obvious question. Could the Nexera become another concept that escapes the drawing board? Acura has done it before. The HSC appeared in 2004, the Advanced Sports Car Concept followed in 2007, and the NSX Concept arrived in 2012 before Acura turned that idea into a production supercar.

So perhaps the Nexera deserves a little attention. Acura says it’s only a preview, but history shows that some Acura concepts have a habit of becoming something much more.
