Tesla’s Newest Cybertruck Is Cheaper, Simpler, And Still Not $40K

Tesla just dropped a new version of the Cybertruck, and it's technically the “base” model—even if the price tag doesn't exactly scream bargain. Called the Long Range single-motor trim, it starts at $71,985, including destination. Interestingly, it's also the version with the longest range.
Tesla estimates 350 miles on a full charge, which is about 25 miles more than the dual-motor AWD model that costs ten grand more. Power goes to the rear wheels only, and while Tesla hasn’t posted an official horsepower figure yet, it claims 0 to 60 mph happens in a respectable 6.2 seconds. There’s also a locking rear differential onboard to help you claw your way through slippery terrain.

Naturally, some features have been shaved off to hit that lower price. Inside, you get textile seats with heating but no ventilation. The sound system scales down from 15 speakers to seven. The powered tonneau cover is gone, and so are the built-in 120-volt power outlets, though Tesla tosses in a plug adapter so you can still power some gear. The suspension setup switches to adaptive coils instead of air, so you lose the adjustable ride height, but it should still feel plenty competent.

Despite these tweaks, this new Cybertruck can still tow up to 7,500 pounds and haul a solid 2,006 pounds in its bed. That’s a bit less than the AWD version but still very usable for most weekend warriors, boat haulers, and trailer-toting adventurers.

As for options, you can get 20-inch wheels, though they’ll cost you some range. Tesla also offers a soft tonneau cover that actually increases range to 362 miles—at least when paired with the smaller wheels. Full Self Driving is still on the menu for $8,000, and you can accessorize with things like underseat storage, a sunshade, or floor mats for under $300 each.

Tesla says this rear-drive Cybertruck will be available sometime between June and July. So if you've been waiting for the cheapest way to get one in your driveway—or just want that extra range without shelling out for dual motors—this could be your sweet spot. Just don't call it basic.
