XPeng had its official debut P5 EV model, ahead of its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. The model is the brand’s third production vehicle. The initial concept for the P5 model is presented as an electric fastback following the P7's. At first sight, the model features an evolutionary front fascia with X-shaped lighting units. Secondly, XPeng P5 shows a wide lower opening, charging ports on both front fenders, and a rounded front bumper.

At the back, we see more pronounced plastic body cladding, a gently sloping roof, and a prominent shoulder line. The designers used a panoramic glass roof, and metallic trim continues to the rear window for a sporty look. Meanwhile, the rear-end has a shorter trunk, slender taillights connected by a thin illuminated strip, and a black rear bumper.

The XPeng P5 has a shorter wheelbase and more length than a standard Tesla Model 3. Per general, P5 measures 189.3 inches (4808 mm) in length and a 190 inches (2768 mm) wheelbase. The interior has been improved with a digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch infotainment system featuring a portrait orientation, stylish leather seats, gloss black trim, and slight metallic accents. So far, the automaker confirmed only the built-in fridge and a fragrance dispenser. The digital key feature technology and a “sleep mode,” that enables the front seats for a full recline will also be part of the P5.

For the exterior, the Chinese claim its P5 model as the “world’s first production smart EV equipped with automotive-grade LiDAR technology.” The surprise comes with the two double-prism LiDAR sensors located instead of the air intakes. This feature helps the driver distinguish the pedestrians, cyclists and scooters, static obstacles, and road works. Also, the sensors are great assistance for the night and low-light conditions, by backlighting and alternating light and dark illumination in tunnels.

Another feature added by XPeng is the equipment of 12 ultrasonic sensors, five millimeter-wave radars, and 13 high-resolution cameras. So many cameras provide redundancy and enable the car to handle “challenging and complex road conditions.” These sensors are the foundation of the automaker's new XPILOT 3.5 semi-autonomous driving system. Also, XPeng developed its Navigation Guided Pilot function to work both on city streets and not just highways.

More details will be announced on April 19th, but there are confirmed rumors of multiple Powertrain options for the P5, RWD, and AWD systems.
