Stop Using Clorox Wipes on Your Car Interior: Why They Ruin Leather, Screens, and Plastic

Clorox wipes feel like the answer to everything. Kitchen counter? Wipe it. Bathroom sink? Wipe it. Every doorknob in the house during flu season? Definitely wipe it.

So it’s totally normal to look at your dusty dashboard and think, “Well… why not?”

Clorox

Here’s why not: Clorox wipes and car interiors are a terrible match.

Yes, they’ll kill germs. But they can also ruin leather, streak your screens, bleach fabrics, and strip the protective coating off pretty much anything soft or shiny. In other words, they clean — and then create a whole new set of problems.

Why Clorox wipes are bad news inside a car

Cars are full of materials that just don’t get along with harsh cleaners.

  • Leather:
The chemicals in Clorox wipes eat away the protective finish. Once that layer is gone, leather dries out, cracks, and starts aging like it lived through the Dust Bowl.

  • Touchscreens:
Modern screens have anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings. Alcohol, ammonia, and bleach wipe those coatings right off. Even “electronics-safe” wipes leave streaks.

  • Fabric & upholstery:
They can stain, leave water marks, or dampen the fabric enough to invite mold. Definitely not the vibe.

  • Plastic & vinyl:
Certain formulas can discolor or dull them permanently.

In short: they can clean a few hard surfaces, but the risk outweighs the convenience.

What to use instead (way safer & actually made for cars)

Good news: car-safe cleaners exist for literally every material in your interior.

  • Interior wipes made for cars:
Armor All, Chemical Guys, Meguiar’s, 303, Jay Leno’s Garage — all make wipes meant for leather, plastic, vinyl, and screens.

  • Leather-specific cleaners:
Lexol, Meguiar’s, Creative Colors International — these keep leather soft, hydrated, and uncracked.

  • Simple DIY options:

    • Mild soap + water on a microfiber cloth

    • Vinegar (lightly diluted) for tough spots

    • 70% isopropyl alcohol on hard surfaces only, never leather

And always use a microfiber cloth — it won’t scratch anything and makes cleaning way easier.

The bottom line

Clorox wipes are fantastic… just not inside your car.
Using them on your interior is like washing your favorite sweater in boiling water — you could, but you’ll regret it every time you look at it afterward.

Your car will look better, last longer, and stay much happier with products actually made for it.
