Mazda Vision-X Coupe Debuts With 503 HP Rotary Hybrid Power

Mazda’s still got that magic touch when it comes to design—and at the Japan Mobility Show, it proved it once again. The star of the stand was the Vision-X Coupe, a sleek, low-slung concept packing a plug-in hybrid rotary setup with a serious punch: 503 horsepower.
But it also got people thinking—what if Mazda turned this sleek coupe into something more practical? Maybe something with more space but just as much style.

With the gas-powered Mazda6 now discontinued and most of the lineup made up of SUVs, there’s a gap in Mazda’s range that something like this could fill. The only non-SUVs left are the Mazda3, the MX-5, and, in some markets, the Mazda2 and BT-50 pickup.
Technically, the Mazda6 has been replaced in spirit by the Mazda-Changan 6e—an all-electric sedan sold in China, Europe, and Australia. It looks sharp, but there’s no wagon version. And that’s where this idea comes in.

Digital artist Sugar Design imagined what a Vision-X–inspired estate might look like, and it’s stunning. The Vision-X Coupe is already longer than the old Mazda6 by about 7 inches, so raising the roofline slightly and extending the rear could easily turn it into a proper touring machine. The render swaps out the concept’s unusual vertical taillights—which climb up the rear window—for a cleaner, more conventional layout that feels better balanced.

Mazda hasn’t confirmed any production plans for the Vision-X, but it’s clear the concept shows where the brand’s design and tech are headed. The powertrain combines a turbocharged rotary engine, an electric motor, and a small battery for 503 horsepower and about 99 miles (160 km) of EV-only range.
