Renault’s Tiny New Off-Roader Looks Ready to Challenge the Jimny
by AutoExpert | 10 March, 2026
Renault has previewed a new compact off-roader called the Bridger Concept, a small SUV designed to take on vehicles like the Suzuki Jimny. The catch is that most people will probably never see it in their local showroom. Renault says the model is aimed mainly at markets in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
The Bridger is meant to be genuinely small. Renault says it will measure under four meters long, making it shorter than the Renault 4 and noticeably more compact than the Dacia Duster. Despite the size, Renault claims it will still offer a surprisingly practical interior, including up to 200 mm of rear knee room and a trunk with around 400 liters of space.

The design leans heavily into the rugged theme. The teaser images show a boxy shape, squared proportions, and a rear-mounted spare wheel that clearly hints at off-road intentions. Renault says the concept is a preview of a production SUV that will play an important role in the brand’s expansion outside Europe.

Development of the production version is expected to take place in India, likely at Renault’s plant in Chennai. From there, the model will be sold across several international markets, but Europe is not currently part of the plan.

Technical details are still limited, but Renault confirmed the SUV will use the Renault Group Modular Platform Small. This architecture can support multiple powertrains, meaning the production model could be offered with combustion engines, hybrid systems, or even a fully electric setup, depending on the market.

If Renault follows the formula used in the Duster lineup, engine options could include a small turbocharged three-cylinder producing around 100 horsepower, a stronger 1.3-liter turbo engine with roughly 160 horsepower, and a hybrid system producing similar output.

Renault expects to introduce the production version of the Bridger in 2027, starting in India before expanding to other markets. For now, though, it remains one of those small off-roaders that looks like it would be a lot of fun to own.
