E-bikes might seem like a modern phenomenon, but did you know that Yamaha, the iconic motorcycle maker, was the pioneer behind the electric bicycle revolution? This year, Yamaha commemorates 30 years of groundbreaking electric bike innovation. To mark this milestone, Yamaha is unveiling a state-of-the-art e-bike motor designed for urban commuters.

In an era where automotive giants like Jeep, Hummer, Audi, and Harley-Davidson are all venturing into the e-bike realm, it might come as a surprise that Yamaha has been selling e-bikes in the U.S. since 2017. Yet, the story goes back even further.

Yamaha

Imagine a time when electric bicycles were rudimentary contraptions, essentially slapping motors onto wheels or bottom brackets, offering an alternative to traditional pedaling. Then, in 1989, Yamaha introduced the world to the first-ever e-bike equipped with PAS, or Power Assist System. This groundbreaking technology seamlessly amplified the rider's pedaling efforts, with the level of assistance perfectly synced to pedal pressure, delivering an intuitive and natural riding experience.

The PAS e-bikes hit the Japanese market in 1993, adorning urban commuter bikes, a popular choice in Japan. Fast forward to today, and Yamaha proudly boasts an impressive track record of producing 2 million e-bikes in Japan and a staggering 4 million drive units worldwide.

Enter the latest marvel in Yamaha's electric bike journey: the PW-series C2 drive unit. This 250-watt powerhouse generates 41 lb-ft of torque, a remarkable 10% increase over its predecessor. Yet, it's astonishingly lightweight at just 6.6 pounds. With a maximum support speed of 15.5 mph, it ensures a swift and efficient ride. The unit offers riders the flexibility of choosing from four different modes, along with a convenient walk-assist function. While initially tailored for European riding preferences, a U.S. version is likely on the horizon.

Yamaha

As Yamaha commemorates three decades of innovation, it's fitting that the anniversary drive unit is designed for city bikes, reflecting the very roots of the Yamaha PAS system. However, Yamaha doesn't stop there. The company produces a range of drive units catering to diverse applications, from high-speed riding to conquering mountain trails. These drive units are not only available for e-bike designers to incorporate into their creations but also power Yamaha's own line of e-bikes. Earlier this year, Yamaha released a special 30th-anniversary edition of their renowned YDX-MORO 07 mountain e-bike, reaffirming their commitment to pushing the boundaries of e-bike technology.
