VW Golf GTI Edition 50 Reclaims Nürburgring Record From Civic Type R

For a while, it looked like Honda had settled the argument. Back in 2023, the Civic Type R laid down a 7:44.881 lap at the Nürburgring, reclaiming the front-wheel-drive production car record and leaving the Volkswagen Golf GTI chasing once again.
VW came close with the Golf GTI Edition 50, but its earlier 7:46.13 effort wasn’t quite enough. Now the German hot hatch is back, and this time it has edged ahead by the smallest of margins.

The new benchmark is 7:44.523, just 0.358 seconds quicker than the Honda. That was enough to put the 320-horsepower GTI Edition 50 back on top. For some perspective, that’s the same lap time the Pagani Zonda S recorded in 2002, which says a lot about how capable modern hot hatches have become.

The Edition 50 reaches 62 mph in 5.3 seconds and tops out at 167 mph. It sits 15 mm lower than a standard GTI and comes with Dynamic Chassis Control. The car also wore the optional GTI Performance package, which drops the ride height by another 5 mm and adds a titanium Akrapovič-style R-Performance exhaust, 19-inch forged wheels, and Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tires. Benjamin Leuchter was behind the wheel for the record run.

Visually, the differences are subtle. Darkened VW badges, gloss black accents, and a red ombré stripe along the lower doors set it apart. Inside, there are red seatbelts, Edition 50 logos, and red-faced pedals. It’s DSG-only and was sold exclusively in Europe, where pricing started at €54,540 before VAT.
With the ninth-generation Golf already in development, Volkswagen has confirmed that both the GTI and Golf R will remain gasoline-powered well into the next decade. And if this Nürburgring result is any indication, the GTI still has plenty of fight left in it.
