Volvo ES90 Brings 700 km Of Range And The Fastest Charging On The Market
by AutoExpert | 4 March, 2025
On March 5, Volvo is set to introduce the all-new, fully electric ES90. This thing isn’t just another EV; it’s the most advanced Volvo ever in terms of computing power, and it’s got the range to back it up—over 700 km (435 miles) on a charge. But if you’re not ready to ditch gas just yet, don’t worry. Volvo’s also giving the S90 a fresh update, keeping an ICE option in the mix.
After teasing it last year, Volvo just shared more pics of the ES90, and it’s got some pretty interesting design choices. The split taillights are the big one—there are extra LED strips on the sides of the rear window, which is definitely not something you see every day.
Other than that, it’s got a classic three-box sedan shape but with all the modern touches, like a sleek roofline, flush door handles, and that roof-mounted LiDAR. Up front, it’s expected to look a lot like the EX90, complete with Volvo’s signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights.

Underneath, the ES90 runs on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, the same as the EX90 SUV. But what really makes this thing stand out is its 800-volt architecture, which means crazy fast charging. We’re talking 350 kW charging speeds, enough to add 300 km (186 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. A 10-80% charge? Just 20 minutes. This puts it on par with some of the fastest-charging EVs available in the market.

Sustainability is a big focus too. Volvo is using recycled and natural materials in the ES90’s construction and is upfront about the origins of the rare metals in the battery. They’re also doubling down on software, with the ES90 being the first Volvo to run a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin setup. That basically means it’s packing the most powerful computing system Volvo has ever put in a car. The same tech is rolling out to the EX90, and current owners will even get a free upgrade.

The ES90 is also going all-in on safety tech. It’s got a LiDAR sensor, five radars, eight cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and an advanced driver monitoring system. Volvo calls it “Safe Space Technology,” and with all those sensors and AI-driven safety features, it’s clear they’re pushing for some serious semi-autonomous capability.

While the ES90 is stealing the spotlight, Volvo’s not forgetting about the S90. The ICE-powered sedan is getting a major update, with a completely redesigned front and rear to keep it looking fresh. It’s been around since 2016 with a light facelift in 2020, so this refresh should extend its life a bit longer. There’s no word yet on whether the V90 wagon will get the same treatment, but it wouldn’t be surprising. Volvo already confirmed that two existing models are getting major updates in 2025, and we already know one of them is the recently refreshed XC60.

Volvo is strategically maintaining some ICE models while intensifying its EV initiative. They already took a step back from their original plan to go fully electric by 2030, and this strategy of offering both gas and electric options seems like the best way to keep everyone happy. Just look at what they did with the XC90—it’s still around even though the EX90 exists. Volvo is addressing all aspects, with the ES90 leading the EV charge and the updated S90 remaining available for those who aren't ready to make the switch. March 5 should bring even more details.
