Volkswagen Touareg Production To Wrap Up In 2026, No Direct Successor Planned

Volkswagen’s big SUV might be nearing its final chapter. According to a report from Autocar, insiders claim production of the Touareg will wrap up in 2026, ending a 24-year run.
If true, the move would mark the quiet exit of a model that once symbolized VW’s push into the premium market. When it launched in 2002, the Touareg wasn’t just another SUV.

The Volkswagen Touareg was born out of a collaboration with Porsche and Audi, sharing bones with the Cayenne and Q7, and even came with wild options like a V-10 diesel that Americans actually got to buy. For a while, it gave VW a foothold in the luxury space alongside the ill-fated Phaeton sedan.

Sales eventually tapered off, and the Volkswagen Touareg left the U.S. after 2017. Now it seems the carmaker won’t be building a direct replacement at all, instead shifting resources toward more affordable cars aimed at cost-sensitive buyers.

If the report proves true, the end of the Touareg would close a fascinating chapter in VW’s history. It was bold, it was over-engineered, and at times it was downright outrageous. That is exactly why people still remember it.
