Toyota’s Toughest Land Cruiser SUV Gets A Mild-Hybrid Boost
by AutoExpert | 24 June, 2025
Toyota is bringing a mild-hybrid version of the Land Cruiser to Europe, adding a touch of electrification to the iconic off-roader without compromising its go-anywhere spirit.
Under the hood, it packs a 2.8-liter diesel engine that delivers 204 horsepower. Helping out is a 48V mild-hybrid system, which includes a lightweight 13-cell lithium-ion battery and a compact electric motor that adds 16 hp and 65 Nm of torque, mostly at startup. The motor also works as a generator, helping boost efficiency and smoothness during low-speed driving.

Power goes through an 8-speed automatic transmission, and of course, all-wheel drive comes standard—because this is still a Land Cruiser, after all. Toyota was careful to preserve the SUV’s legendary off-road capability. The electric motor sits neatly on top of the engine, so ground clearance and rugged performance stay untouched.

European customers will be able to place orders soon, with the first deliveries expected by the end of the year. This mild-hybrid Land Cruiser may not be fully electric, but it’s a solid step toward cleaner performance while staying true to its tough, go-anywhere roots.
