China's electric car scene is rapidly expanding, with the JMEV01 emerging as a noteworthy newcomer. Initially known as the SC-01, this lightweight electric sports car garnered attention in 2022 and is now ready for production. It’s all set to hit the Chinese market on April 15, 2025.

The JMEV01 started as a project by a small startup called Small Sports Car (SSC), but now it’s part of the JMEV brand under Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC). JMC, which was once in a joint venture with Renault, has brought in some extra backing from Xiaomi, so there’s some serious muscle behind this car. Talk about a high-tech, high-energy collaboration!

Priced at around 300,000 yuan (about $41,300), the JMEV01 is surprisingly affordable for what it offers. While many new EVs end up looking like tech-forward blobs, this one’s different. It’s built on a tubular space frame chassis, keeping the car’s weight down to just 3,009 lbs (1,365 kg). Compared to the MG Cyberster, which weighs 4,376 lbs, the JMEV01 is significantly lighter. The low weight should make the JMEV01 a blast to drive, and with dual electric motors pushing out 429 hp (320 kW), it can go from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds—quick by anyone’s standards.

The battery pack, sourced from CALB, promises up to 323 miles (520 km) of range on the Chinese CLTC cycle, so this is no slouch in the efficiency department either. The best part? It’s as fast as it is fun to drive, with the type of performance that would give any sports car a run for its money.

What really makes the JMEV01 stand out is its look. While many EVs these days strive to achieve a futuristic aesthetic through curvy lines and smooth surfaces, this one adopts a more classic approach. The front is aggressive, with sharp headlights, a large grille, and functional air intakes. From the back, the inspiration from rally legends like the Lancia Stratos is undeniable. The flat decklid, subtle lip spoiler, and round taillights bring a sense of nostalgia that’s missing from a lot of modern electric cars.

JMEV 01

It’s refreshing to see a car that doesn’t just focus on being tech-heavy and sleek, but also feels like it has character. The JMEV01 it’s a reminder of how fun driving can be, even in the world of zero-emissions. It might not be a household name yet, but this car has all the right ingredients to be a game-changer. Let’s see if it catches on beyond China!
