The Golf GTI Just Turned 50 And Got The Fastest Lap In VW History

Volkswagen is celebrating 50 years of the iconic GTI with a special edition—and it’s the most powerful one yet. Say hello to the Golf GTI Edition 50.
Built on the latest Mk8.5 platform, this version takes things up a notch with a tweaked 2.0-liter turbocharged engine pushing out 321 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. That’s a solid bump over the standard GTI and even edges past the Clubsport.

Performance? Pretty sharp. 0 to 62 mph takes 5.5 seconds, and it’ll keep pulling until it hits a top speed of 168 mph. Not bad for a front-wheel-drive hatch.
The Golf GTI Edition 50 has been properly dialed in for handling. It rides 20mm lower than the standard GTI and 5mm lower than the Clubsport. The suspension’s been stiffened, the camber’s more aggressive up front, and the rear setup borrows a few tricks from the old Mk7 GTI to improve grip and stability during quick changes of direction.

They’ve even tuned the steering and chassis systems to match the new hardware, making it sharper and more responsive in the corners. Sticky Bridgestone Potenza Race tires wrap around lightweight 19-inch wheels, shedding a couple of kilos per corner. If you want to go all in, there’s an optional Akrapovič titanium exhaust that saves another 11 kg.
All that tuning paid off. The new Golf GTI Edition 50 just set the fastest Nürburgring lap time of any production VW: 7 minutes and 46 seconds!

Visually, the Golf GTI Edition 50 keeps things low-key. You’ll spot black graphics along the sides, a ‘50’ badge on the rear spoiler, and dark tailpipes, but it otherwise stays true to the GTI’s classic design.
VW hasn’t announced pricing or how many they’ll build, but expect it to start around £45,000. Orders are expected to open by the end of the year, with deliveries rolling out in early 2026.
