Speeding Over 100 MPH in Connecticut Could Now Land You In Jail

Connecticut’s lawmakers just made it clear: if you’re flying down the highway at over 100 mph, they’re coming for you.
In a unanimous vote, the Connecticut House of Representatives passed a bill aimed at cracking down on what they’re calling “extreme reckless driving.” Basically, if you’re caught going 100 mph or more, you could be facing some serious consequences.
For first-time offenders, that means a fine between $200 and $600, up to 30 days in jail—or possibly both. Do it again, and the penalties jump big time: a fine of up to $1,000 and/or a full year behind bars. Plus, your car gets impounded for 48 hours, and you’ll have to cover the towing and storage fees before you can drive it home.
The bill still needs to pass the state Senate, but Connecticut’s Attorney General William Tong is already backing it hard. He said the vote sends a strong, bipartisan message to drivers who think the rules don’t apply to them: “This reckless misconduct will not be tolerated.” He also stressed that speeding like this puts everyone on the road at risk.
Compared to the state’s current reckless driving law—targeting anyone driving over 85 mph or driving in a way that endangers others—the new bill adds tougher fines, longer potential jail time, and the added sting of vehicle impoundment. If you’ve got a lead foot in Connecticut, it might be time to ease up.
