Rivian’s New R2 Leaked Early and the Details Are a Big Deal
by AutoExpert | 12 March, 2026
Rivian planned to unveil the R2 soon, but things moved faster than expected. Details about the new electric crossover briefly appeared online before the official launch. The page disappeared quickly, but not before people saved it, so most of the key information is already available.
The R2 is expected to arrive first, in a Performance version priced at about $57,990 before destination charges. This model reportedly uses an 87.9 kWh battery paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that delivers 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque.

Rivian also claims up to 330 miles of range, along with fast-charging capability that can take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in around 29 minutes.
Inside, the R2 appears to keep the same practical, outdoorsy vibe. The cabin features birch wood trim, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Other touches include a nine-speaker audio system, matrix LED headlights, 21-inch wheels, and a small flashlight integrated into the front door. Buyers will also be able to add Rivian’s Autonomy+ driver assistance subscription and a tow package that allows the SUV to pull up to 4,400 pounds.

A slightly cheaper R2 Premium is expected to launch later this year, starting at $53,990. It uses a similar setup but with lower power output, producing about 450 horsepower and 537 lb-ft of torque. It also drops the semi-active suspension and switches to smaller 20-inch wheels, along with a few fewer drive modes.
Further down the line, Rivian plans to introduce an R2 Standard in 2027. That version keeps the same battery but uses a single rear motor producing about 350 horsepower. Interestingly, it should travel slightly farther on a single charge, with an estimated range of 345 miles. Equipment is simpler as well, with a basic five-speaker sound system, heated front seats, and a darker interior theme.

The most affordable Rivian R2 will arrive toward the end of 2027 with a smaller battery pack delivering roughly 265 miles of range and a starting price around $45,000.
Across the lineup, the R2 measures about 185.9 inches long and rides on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, placing it firmly in the compact SUV category. Ground clearance reaches up to 9.6 inches, and cargo space tops out at 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The new model will also use an NACS charging port and offer several exterior colors, including Borealis, Glacier White, Launch Green, and Midnight. If the leaked details are accurate, the R2 could end up being one of Rivian’s most important vehicles yet, mainly because it finally brings the brand into a price range that a lot more people can realistically consider.
