Rivian R2 Just Got Real… and the Numbers Look Strong
by AutoExpert | 8 April, 2026
We already had a rough idea of what the Rivian R2 would be, but these new EPA details add a bit more clarity. It helps piece together how it will actually stack up in real use.
The top version, called Performance, uses an 86.8 kWh usable battery. You also get a choice between 20-inch or 21-inch wheels, and that actually matters more than you’d think. With 20s and all-terrain tires, range is rated at 314 miles (505 km). Switch to 21-inch road tires, and it stretches to 335 miles (539 km).

That’s impressive, especially when you look at something like the Tesla Model Y Performance, which sits at 306 miles (492 km). The catch is weight. The Model Y is much lighter at 4,466 lbs (2,025 kg), while the R2 Performance comes in at 5,250 lbs (2,381 kg) with the larger wheels. That’s a 784 lb (356 kg) gap.

Rivian is trying to make up for that with smarter tech. The R2 gets a new in-house heat pump, designed to handle both hot and cold conditions better while also cutting down noise. There’s also a high-voltage coolant heater and a battery health monitoring system built in.

At launch, the $57,990 Performance model will be the one to get. It makes 656 hp and 609 lb-ft (825 Nm), so it is not exactly lacking in power.
Later on, Rivian plans to roll out a slightly more affordable R2 Premium at $53,990. That one drops to 450 hp and 537 lb-ft (727 Nm) but could actually go further on a charge, though exact numbers are still not confirmed.

Then in 2027, a Standard version joins the lineup with 350 hp and 355 lb-ft (481 Nm), and early estimates point to around 345 miles (555 km) of range.
There is also talk of an even more basic version coming by late 2027, likely with a smaller battery and about 275 miles (443 km) of range.

So yeah, the R2 is not just a smaller R1S. It feels like the car Rivian really needs right now. Something a bit more accessible, but still very much in line with what the brand is about.
