Nissan Unveils Third Generation e-Power Hybrid With 52 MPG Efficiency
by AutoExpert | 29 June, 2025
Nissan is doubling down on its unique self-charging hybrid tech with the debut of its third-generation e-Power system, and this one looks like a real step up.
The new setup made its first appearance in the refreshed European Qashqai, but it won’t stay there for long. It’s already confirmed for the next-generation Rogue in the US and the upcoming Elgrand minivan in Japan. In short, Nissan’s betting big on this tech worldwide.

So what’s new? Well, quite a bit. The system builds on the e-Power hybrid introduced in 2022, and Nissan says this version delivers better fuel efficiency, smoother power, and a quieter ride. They even go so far as to claim it blends “the range and convenience of diesel with the smoothness of an EV.”
In the updated Qashqai, fuel economy is now rated at 4.5 liters per 100 km (about 52 mpg), which is a solid improvement over the outgoing model’s 5.3 liters per 100 km (44 mpg). That means up to 1,200 km (746 miles) on a single tank—more than enough for a long weekend road trip. CO₂ emissions are also down to 102 g/km, a nice drop from 116.

The secret sauce here is how the hybrid works. Unlike a typical setup, the 1.5-liter gasoline engine doesn’t actually drive the wheels. Instead, it acts as a generator that feeds power to the electric motor and a compact 2.1 kWh battery, with a little help from regenerative braking. This setup means there’s no traditional transmission, so you get that smooth, instant EV-like response every time you hit the pedal.
Everything—including the electric motor, inverter, and other key components—is packed into one lightweight, space-saving unit, which helps boost overall efficiency.

Inside, it’s also a more peaceful place to be. Nissan says they’ve managed to cut cabin noise by over 5 dB, especially when the car is working hard. You’ll feel less vibration too, making for a much calmer drive. However, the new Sport mode gives you a boost to 202 hp, thanks to an extra 13 hp from the electric side of things.
One more win: the service interval has been bumped up to around 12,400 miles, which means fewer trips to the shop and lower running costs over time.

Production kicks off at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK, and European deliveries start in September 2025. After that, the new e-Power tech will spread to markets in Africa and Oceania. As for pricing, we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the details.
In the US, the new e-Power system will land in the next Rogue by the end of the year 2026, and it’ll also bring new life to the long-awaited Elgrand reboot in Japan. If you’ve been curious about hybrids but want something that feels more electric and less complicated, this new-gen e-Power might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.
