New Safety Rules Force Suzuki To Axe Iconic Models
by AutoExpert | 9 February, 2025
Tighter safety regulations, effective from March 2025, are driving Suzuki's significant changes in Australia. These new regulations mandate the use of more advanced AEB (autonomous emergency braking) systems, a requirement that most of Suzuki's current lineup does not meet.
While the Swift and the five-door Jimny XL remain safe, models such as the Ignis, Swift Sport, Vitara, S-Cross, and the three-door Jimny are being phased out. The Ignis doesn’t offer AEB as standard, and the others have outdated systems, making them non-compliant.

Michael Pachota, Suzuki Australia's managing director, told CarExpert that this shake-up was kind of inevitable since those models were already at the end of their run. Production orders have stopped, but there’s still enough stock to keep them on sale through 2025.

However, there is still hope for the three-door Jimny. Suzuki is looking into bringing it back with a tech update, possibly borrowing the newer dual-camera AEB system from its five-door sibling. Whether that'll come as a simple update or a full facelift remains to be seen.

As for the rest of the lineup, expect hybrid versions of the Suzuki Vitara and S-Cross to arrive next year. The facelifted Vitara is already on sale in Europe, so Aussies have a pretty good idea of what’s coming. On the downside, it looks like the Ignis and Swift Sport will bow out for good, with no replacements on the horizon.

However, it’s not all bad news. Suzuki is introducing the Fronx SUV from India to fill some gaps. And they’re not the only ones making changes. The new safety rules are forcing other automakers to cut models too, like Mitsubishi’s ASX, Eclipse Cross, and Pajero Sport, as well as the Mazda6. Looks like a bit of a lineup overhaul across the board.
