New BMW X3 L Offers More Space—But Only For Chinese Buyers

BMW has just launched the facelifted X3 in China, but there's a twist—it’s only available in long-wheelbase form. Unlike other markets where the standard-wheelbase X3 remains an option, Chinese buyers will get the stretched version as their only choice. The reason? Local demand for extra rear legroom.
This is actually the first time BMW has ever made a long-wheelbase X3, making it a pretty big deal for the Chinese market.

The new BMW X3 L, first announced last year, is built locally and features a 4.37-inch longer wheelbase than the global model, giving rear passengers an extra 3.7 inches of knee room. Despite the added length, it still maintains BMW’s signature 50:50 weight distribution.

Compared to the outgoing model, the BMW X3 L is 4.9 inches longer and 0.9 inches wider, though the refreshed design does a good job of masking its increased size. At the entry level, there's the X3 xDrive 25L Luxury, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. It’s not the fastest SUV out there, but it still manages 0-62 mph in 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 133 mph.

For those wanting more power, the X3 xDrive 30L delivers 258 hp and 295 lb-ft from an upgraded version of the same engine. It cuts the 0-62 mph sprint down to 6.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 148 mph.

BMW has also tailored the X3 L’s features to meet Chinese customer preferences. It comes standard with LED lighting around the kidney grilles and unique digital services through the infotainment system. Buyers can choose from five metallic paint options and one Frozen finish.
