Modified Hummer EV Faces Warranty Nightmare After Dealer Refuses Repairs

After having his Hummer customized by SoFlo Customs, Dustan Broom's warranty on his GMC Hummer EV was suddenly canceled by GM.

At first, GM actually honored the warranty, even with the modifications. They covered issues like problems with the My Modes settings and the power tonneau cover. But then, out of nowhere, GM decided to cancel everything, and Dustan’s truck was left high and dry.

Broom picked up his modified Hummer from SoFlo in April and immediately started running into problems with My Modes and the tonneau cover. He took it to the dealer for service, and in July, they ordered parts for the cover. But when it came to the My Modes issue, they couldn’t replicate the problem, so Broom had to wait.

A few months later, in December, the replacement parts for My Modes finally arrived. But when Broom went to pick up his truck, nothing had been fixed. The My Modes functionality was totally gone. And to make matters worse, the power tonneau cover was still acting up. In fact, it even started smoking in his garage after malfunctioning.

After this scary moment, Broom took his Hummer back to the dealer for the cover fix. Less than two weeks later, he got a call that completely flipped the situation. GM told him they’d voided his warranty because of the modifications. They hadn’t figured out the exact problem with the truck but decided to blame SoFlo’s custom work for the issues.

No more repairs, no more coverage. The reason GM gave for voiding the warranty was the aftermarket ride-height rods, which allow for slight height adjustments but don’t mess with the core functions of the truck. Broom thinks GM is using the mods as a way to avoid taking responsibility, especially since the tonneau cover issue ended in a fire.

This whole mess serves as a warning for anyone looking to buy a modified vehicle. Aftermarket changes can easily mess with your warranty, and what’s covered today might not be tomorrow if the car’s been modified outside of the dealership.
