SAIC-MG is making a bold move in the electric SUV market with its all-new MG ES5, and it’s got people talking. This new model isn’t just a simple update to the popular ZS EV—it’s a completely fresh take. Bigger, sleeker, and packed with the latest tech, the ES5 is set to replace the ZS EV in markets like Europe, the UK, and Australia.

The ES5 adopts a fully electric powertrain, thereby enhancing its performance. Its design is clean and modern, with a smooth, grille-less front that gives it a distinct electric feel. The front bumper hints at sportiness with details borrowed from the MG Cyberster roadster, and the sharp, split LED headlights add a bit of attitude.

The MG ES5 surpasses the ZS EV in length by approximately six inches, primarily due to its extended wheelbase, which provides additional interior space for passengers and cargo. From the side, it’s a bit more understated, but the full-width taillights at the rear give it a stylish, contemporary look, in line with MG’s newer models. Step inside, and the ES5 feels like it’s designed for the future. There’s a flat-bottom steering wheel that adds a sporty touch, and a digital instrument cluster that keeps everything sleek and modern.

The large infotainment screen dominates the dashboard, giving you everything you need at your fingertips, while the floating center console is a pleasing design flourish that adds both style and functionality. The ES5 utilizes the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) technology as the MG4 hatchback. It comes with a single electric motor at the rear, delivering 168 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque—plenty for everyday driving.

For now, it’s a rear-wheel-drive setup, but there’s speculation that a dual-motor version could be on the horizon, offering even more power and traction. In terms of battery options, the ES5 doesn’t disappoint. In China, buyers can choose from three different battery packs, the largest of which is a 62.2 kWh unit that offers up to 525 km (326 miles) of range according to the CLTC cycle.

Expected to arrive in export markets by 2025, the MG ES5 will face competition from models such as the Kia EV4 and Peugeot E-2008.
