Land Rover Just Built A Monster: The New Defender Dakar D7X-R
by AutoExpert | 1 December, 2025
Land Rover has unveiled what’s easily the toughest Defender they’ve built so far, and it’s heading straight for the 2026 Dakar Rally. The new Defender Dakar D7X-R is based on the Defender Octa, and it’ll be driven by none other than Stéphane Peterhansel — a 14-time Dakar winner. So yes, expectations are high.
Since it’s racing in the “Stock” category, Land Rover couldn’t overhaul everything, but the upgrades they did add are all practical. The rally car gets wider fenders, trimmed bumpers, extra vents, a larger intake, dual snorkels, and roof-mounted LEDs.

They even removed the tailgate-mounted spare wheel carrier to save a bit of weight. The desert-inspired “Geopalette” livery gives it a rugged, purposeful look. The Dakar version rides on 35-inch tires with more ground clearance, and the brakes are beefed up with vented discs and multi-piston calipers front and rear.
The engine stays familiar: the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 from the Defender Octa. This time it runs on sustainable fuel, paired with the same eight-speed automatic—just with a shorter final-drive ratio for off-road work. Land Rover also built a new motorsport control unit, and one of its standout features is “Flight Mode,” which manages torque during jumps so the Defender lands more smoothly. A massive 550-liter fuel tank has been fitted for long Dakar stages.

Inside, it’s full rally spec. The cabin is stripped out and fitted with a roll cage, carbon panels, racing seats with six-point harnesses, and extra screens. The rear seats are gone, replaced with space for three spare wheels, tools, jacks, compressed air, and water.
Production takes place in Nitra, Slovakia. Test prototypes have already covered more than 6,000 km of off-road running ahead of the 2026 start in Saudi Arabia. Dakar will throw more than 5,000 km of timed stages and roughly 80 hours of driving at the teams, so nothing about this will be easy.

Land Rover’s lineup includes Peterhansel/Mika Metge, Rokas Baciuška/Oriol Vidal, and Sara Price/Sean Berriman, with Ivan James overseeing the team. In the Stock class, the Defender will be up against rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser GR Sport and the Nissan Patrol. It’s shaping up to be a seriously tough fight, and this Defender Dakar D7X-R looks more than ready for it.
