This Lamborghini Part Costs $1,200… and a Ford Version Fixes It for $40

Lamborghini parts are known for high prices, but that does not always mean the hardware is unique. The Aventador gas cap is a good example.
A workshop in the US had a 2015 Aventador with an EVAP leak. The fix pointed to a faulty gas cap. Simple problem, expensive solution. Ordering a new one through official channels would cost over $1,200.

That number checks out. New caps sit around $1,000 before shipping, and even used ones can go for $400 or more. For something as basic as a gas cap, that feels hard to justify.
Then came the interesting part. Looking inside the cap, the mechanic spotted FoMoCo markings, which point to Ford. That led to a match. A gas cap from a European Ford Focus Mk2, priced around $40, uses the same internal plastic parts.
The difference sits on the outside. Lamborghini wraps its version in machined aluminum, which gives it a premium look. Underneath, the working parts are the same.
The fix was simple. Swap the plastic internals from the Ford cap into the Lamborghini housing. The original metal cap stays, the function returns, and the cost drops to about $100 in total.

Most people will never deal with this in a Lamborghini, but the idea applies more widely. Many premium brands share parts across different models. If you check where those parts come from, you can often find the same component for much less without the badge driving up the price.
