Hyundai Confirms Midsize Pickup Coming By 2027

Hyundai itself is a long way away from its days when it wanted nothing to do with pickups. But now, it appears the brand is preparing for an all-in truck lineup. Kia dipped its toe in with the Tasman in Australia—a proper work ute, even if sales haven’t exactly boomed.
Elsewhere in North America, Hyundai’s Santa Cruz is carving out a niche for itself, more one of lifestyle than labor, designed for bikes and beaches rather than concrete and dirt.

But the truth is, what’s next? According to Hyundai Australia’s chief executive, Don Romano, a new midsize truck is in development, targeting service around mid-2027. It will not share parts or badges with the Kia Tasman or any GM project, he says—this one is pure Hyundai, from the ground up.

Romano even referred to it as “mind-blowing,” suggesting that something remarkable is brewing behind closed doors. The new ute will be tough, squarely for markets dominated by the Hilux and Ranger. Desirable diesel or hybrid-type units, loads of off-road grit, and the kind of durability Aussies care about. On the other side of the world, Hyundai’s also building a pickup truck for North America—a bigger, body-on-frame truck capable of carrying hybrid or extended-range EV power.

After the Tasman, Santa Cruz, the Aussie ute, and the North American truck, the Hyundai Group will have a haul for the fans, from casual adventurers to full-time tradies. Not too bad for a brand that, not long ago, wouldn’t even say the word “pickup.”
