Ford Bronco Basecamp Debuts In China With 445-HP EV Power And Huge Range

Ford didn’t waste any time after rolling out the electric and range-extended versions of the Bronco Basecamp in China. Order books are officially open, and this thing is shaping up to be one of the most important models Ford has launched there in years.
Pricing starts at 229,800 yuan (about $32,300) and runs up to 282,800 yuan ($39,800), which is basically Bronco Sport money. The difference is that Chinese buyers get a whole lot more metal and a whole lot more tech for that cash.

Instead of the small turbo engines we get in the American Bronco Sport, the Basecamp goes full EV with a 105.4 kWh battery and dual motors pushing out 445 horsepower. On a full charge, Ford claims up to 404 miles of range on China’s CLTC test cycle.

Then there’s the range-extended version, which uses a 1.5-liter turbo engine as a generator feeding two electric motors and a 43.7 kWh battery. That setup makes 416 horsepower and up to 137 miles of electric-only driving. With the engine helping out, total range jumps to a ridiculous 758 miles on the same optimistic test cycle.

Size-wise, the Basecamp is basically a stretched Bronco. It shares the U.S. four-door Bronco’s wheelbase at 116.1 inches, but at almost 198 inches long, it’s even bigger overall. Compared to the small American Bronco Sport, it looks huge. That alone will appeal to Chinese buyers, who generally prefer larger SUVs.

On top of that, Ford loaded the Basecamp with roof-mounted LiDAR and more than 30 sensors to enable advanced driver assistance features. Inside, it’s way more high-tech than anything wearing the Bronco badge elsewhere: a 15.6-inch center screen, full digital gauges, and a wild 70-inch head-up display.

For now, the Basecamp is staying put. There are no plans to export it outside China.
