EV Sales Q1 2025: GM Surges, Tesla Slumps, Market Shifts?
by AutoExpert | 3 April, 2025
The first quarter numbers are in for electric vehicle sales, and it's quite the mixed bag. While some car companies are popping champagne, others might be reaching for something stronger.
General Motors is definitely in celebration mode. Their EV sales shot up by a whopping 94 percent compared to last year, moving nearly 32,000 electric vehicles in just three months. Meanwhile, Tesla's having a rough start to 2025, with deliveries dropping 13 percent to about 337,000 vehicles.

The Chevy Equinox EV has turned into GM's golden child, selling over 10,000 units despite being on the market for less than a year. Even the massive GMC Hummer EV is finding its audience, with sales more than doubling to nearly 3,500 trucks. Only the Cadillac Lyriq saw sales decline, but the brand's new Optiq and Escalade IQ EVs more than made up the difference.

Over at Ford, things are looking up with an 11.5 percent increase in EV sales. The Mustang Mach-E continues to attract buyers with sales jumping 21 percent, and the E-Transit van saw nearly 30 percent more deliveries. These gains helped offset the slight dip in F-150 Lightning pickup sales.

BMW's battery-powered lineup had a strong quarter too, with sales climbing 26.4 percent. The i4 and iX models were particularly hot, while the pricier i5 and i7 saw sales cool a bit.
It's not all sunshine for everyone though. Rivian's deliveries plummeted 36 percent, and Kia watched both its EV6 and EV9 models slip slightly. Hyundai had mixed results—Ioniq 5 sales climbed 26 percent while Ioniq 6 numbers fell 9 percent.

Some of the biggest percentage gainers were actually from smaller players. Subaru Soltera sales nearly tripled, and Toyota's bZ4X more than doubled its sales. The Volkswagen ID.4 had a solid 24.3 percent gain, and the company's new ID.Buzz van has moved almost 2,000 units already.

A few newcomers have entered the scene as well. Honda's Prologue has sold over 9,500 units, while its luxury cousin, the Acura ZDX, moved nearly 5,000. Stellantis jumped into the EV game with the Jeep Wagoneer S and Dodge Charger Daytona EV, selling about 2,600 and 1,900 respectively.

Remember when car companies were falling over themselves to announce their all-electric futures just a few years ago? Well, reality has been a bit different than the PowerPoint presentations suggested. Customer demand hasn't quite matched the hype, causing many automakers to pump the brakes on their electrification timelines.

With policy changes and potential tariffs looming, the next quarter's numbers will be telling. Will this be just a bump in the road, or are we looking at a genuine market correction? Stay tuned.
