Buick Goes Full Sci-Fi In China: New Electra Line Brings AR, AI, And Speed
by AutoExpert | 22 April, 2025
Buick just made a big announcement at its Chinese brand day, introducing a new Electra sub-brand focused on premium electric vehicles, plus a next-gen vehicle platform called Xiao Yao. This new architecture is set to support six new models over the next year.
Developed specifically for the Chinese market, Xiao Yao offers exceptional flexibility, suiting a wide range of vehicles from sedans and SUVs to minivans. It also supports front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive setups and can handle different powertrains, including plug-in hybrids, fully electric systems, and extended-range EVs.

For the electric side of things, Buick has teamed up with CATL to develop a lithium iron phosphate battery capable of 640 kW ultra-fast charging. That means you could get up to 217 miles of range from just a 10-minute charge. Tech is a big focus, too. Buick is partnering with Momenta to roll out Level 2 urban driver assistance starting in 2025. Inside, future models will run on a Qualcomm 8775 chip, supporting features like a huge 50-inch augmented reality head-up display, eight different interior screens, and built-in AI.

Buick also prioritizes comfort. You can anticipate multi-position zero-gravity seats and a "5-Constant" comfort system that monitors temperature, humidity, oxygen levels, air quality, and cabin noise. Buick says the lineup will blend its global heritage with local innovation. In addition to a new sedan and SUV, Buick teased a flagship MPV called the Encasa, which will be available as both a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric model. Buick aims to reinforce its dominance in China’s MPV segment.

Design-wise, Buick also showed off three sleek concept cars. They all feature a bold shark-nose front end, sharp headlights, large wheels, flush door handles, and roof-mounted sensors. Power output could go as high as 443 hp. So, it looks like Buick’s Chinese lineup is about to get a lot more futuristic—and fast.
