BMW Starts Testing Solid-State Batteries In i7 Prototype
by AutoExpert | 21 May, 2025
BMW is diving deeper into the future of electric mobility by starting real-world tests of solid-state batteries—and they’re using a prototype version of the i7 luxury sedan to do it.
So what’s the big deal with solid-state batteries? Compared to the lithium-ion packs we see in EVs today, they offer a much higher energy density. That means you get more range without adding extra weight, and they’re safer and more efficient too. Basically, it’s the kind of upgrade that could seriously level up the EV game.

BMW has been working on this tech with U.S.-based battery company Solid Power since 2022. The new battery cells they’re testing are prismatic (like the ones already in the i7) but re-engineered with solid-state materials instead of the usual liquid electrolytes.
Even though testing is well underway, BMW hasn’t said when a solid-state-equipped production car might hit the road. However, the fact that they're already running real-world tests shows they’re not just talking about the future—they’re actively building it.
Solid-state batteries are widely seen as a major milestone for EVs. With better range, faster charging, and improved safety, it’s no wonder every major automaker wants in. Right now, BMW looks like one of the brands leading that charge.
