BMW To Launch Next-Gen 2-Series Gran Coupe With Extended Wheelbase For China

BMW is getting ready to roll out the next-generation 2-Series Gran Coupe, and it’s shaping up to be a big leap forward from the previous model. The Chinese government has now released official photos of the 2025 BMW 2-Series in its long-wheelbase version, which will likely be sold only in China.

This little 2-Series Gran Coupe L will most likely be on sale at the same time as the 1-Series sedan. The "L" suffix indicates an additional inch or two between the axles, which means there is greater room for the back sea.

The 2,780 mm (109.5 in) wheelbase of the 2-Series Gran Coupe L, as reported in the paperwork, is 110 mm (4.3 in) longer than that of the previous model. Its length is now 4,663 mm (183.6 inches), an increase of 137 mm (5.4 inches). A little boost could also be in store for the standard-wheelbase model destined for Western countries like the US, EU, and others, bringing it in line with its Chinese equivalent.

The longer variant is distinguished by a smoother beltline at the Hoffmeister kink, as well as doors with modestly revised flush knobs. Besides these changes, the designers reworked the front fascia of both versions to resemble the mechanically similar 2025 BMW 1-Series hatchback. The back is similarly revamped, taking design cues from the X2's muscular LED taillights.

According to new patent drawings and spy photos, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe for the Western market will be available in both standard and M-Package trim levels. However, Chinese specs only feature the sportier body package on the 2-Series Gran Coupe L, suggesting that it could be the standard equipment for that version.

The 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe, like the 1-Series, X1, and X2, will employ a revised UKL platform under the hood. Possible powertrain configurations are: the 1.5-liter 220L with 172 horsepower; the 2.0-liter 225L with 224 horsepower; and the 2.0-liter performance M235L with 330 horsepower.

Meanwhile, probably powering the M235 xDrive will be the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine used in the M135 model, which can produce as much as 312 hp.

The BMW Brilliance joint venture will be responsible for manufacturing the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe L in China. The regular 2-Series Gran Coupe will still be built in Leipzig, Germany, and its formal appearance is anticipated for later in 2024.
