BMW M5 Touring Outsells The Sedan And That’s Great News For The M3 Wagon
by AutoExpert | 29 May, 2025
Last year, BMW hinted that the future of the M3 Touring in the U.S. might depend on how well the M5 Touring performs. Well, a few months into the M5 wagon’s run, it looks like the magic is already starting to happen.
According to BMW M boss Frank van Meel, demand for the M5 Touring in the U.S. has actually outpaced that of the sedan. No official numbers yet, but that kind of enthusiasm is exactly what fans of the M3 Touring have been hoping for.

Earlier this year, BMW admitted they’d underestimated just how popular the M5 Touring would be. Initially, they expected it to make up about a third of M5 production. In reality, it’s nearly a 50/50 split with the sedan. It seems the wagon’s combination of utility and monster performance is finally hitting home for American buyers.

The 2025 BMW M5 Touring shares its 717-hp hybrid V8 powertrain with the sedan, delivering a jaw-dropping 738 lb-ft of torque and a 0–60 mph time of just 3.5 seconds, even with a curb weight north of 5,500 pounds. It's a full-blown performance car in practical clothing.

As for the M3 Touring, the next generation is already deep in development. Built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, it’ll support both electric and gas powertrains and is expected to debut later this year, with sales starting in late 2026 or early 2027.

In the end, the more love the M5 wagon gets, the better the odds that BMW gives the M3 Touring the green light for the States.
