BMW i3 Sedan Debuts March 18 With Neue Klasse Technology

BMW has confirmed when we will finally see its next major electric model. The new BMW i3 will debut on March 18, bringing the brand’s Neue Klasse design and technology to one of BMW’s most recognizable nameplates. In many ways, it feels like a big step for the company, since the 3 Series has always been at the center of BMW’s lineup.
Technically, BMW already sells an electric 3 Series in China. But the upcoming i3 will be the first version developed from the ground up as a dedicated EV and intended for global markets. Later on, BMW will also introduce a combustion-powered 3 Series that looks very similar but rides on an updated version of the CLAR platform used by today’s gasoline models.

The teaser image BMW shared does not reveal much beyond the debut date and a hint of the car’s new lighting design. Still, between earlier concept cars and prototype sightings, the direction is fairly clear. The i3 will adopt the brand’s Neue Klasse styling, which blends classic BMW elements with a more minimal, modern look.

Up front, the traditional kidney grille returns in a different form. Instead of functioning as an air intake, it becomes more of a glowing design element. Slim diagonal LED signatures will also become a defining feature of Neue Klasse models.

Inside, the i3 will introduce BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive system. Instead of a typical instrument cluster, key information will be projected across the lower edge of the windshield, paired with a central touchscreen. The idea is to keep important details within the driver’s natural line of sight while simplifying the dashboard.

The technology under the surface is just as important. The Neue Klasse platform uses an 800-volt electrical system that supports charging speeds of up to around 400 kW. BMW says the car could add more than 230 miles of range in about 10 minutes at a fast charger, with some versions targeting roughly 500 miles of WLTP range.

Early versions of the BMW i3 are expected to use a dual-motor setup similar to the BMW iX3, producing around 469 horsepower. Over time, the lineup will likely expand to include more variants.
