Audi Transfers Italdesign Ownership To UST: Key Details Explained
by AutoExpert | 11 December, 2025
Audi confirms Italdesign is changing hands. Months of rumors about a shrinking budget and reorganization have resulted in the sale of one of the world's most storied design houses to UST, a California tech company with global aspirations and an exceptionally expansive marketing lexicon.
UST says it operates in more than 30 countries with a workforce of over 30,000 people. The company says it has spent years partnering with big-name automakers, but its public descriptions are vague and full of tech-speak. Even so, its focus on software and digital development seems to be exactly what Audi wanted.

Even with the sale, Italdesign isn’t leaving the Volkswagen Group family completely. Lamborghini will keep what’s described as a “significant stake,” and Audi promises to stick around as a major client and long-term partner. No one is sharing how much of the company changed hands or what the deal cost.
Both parties are claiming that the partnership's goal is to combine UST's tech-centric strategy with Italdesign's traditional strengths in design, prototyping, engineering, and small-scale production. In short, the idea being sold is that, between them, they can bring a car from sketch to a completed, modern, software-filled product under one roof.

The deal still needs regulatory approval, but Italdesign CEO Antonio Casu is already calling it a win, saying the move will help the studio expand its reach and push into new markets. Audi’s development chief, Geoffrey Bouquot, sounded equally optimistic, praising Italdesign’s long-standing role in Audi projects and expressing confidence that the relationship will continue under the new structure.
What this all means for Italdesign in the long run is the real question. The studio built its reputation on shapes and surfaces, not cloud services and over-the-air updates. Things are changing quickly in the auto world, and Italdesign looks ready to adapt, pairing its design know-how with new technology.
