The Audi A5 E-Hybrid PHEV Enters The Plug-In Battle With Class-Leading Range

Audi is stepping up its plug-in hybrid game with the new A5 PHEV, boasting an impressive WLTP-rated electric range of 68 miles. That puts it ahead of the BMW 330e’s 62-mile figure, though some rivals still manage to edge it out.
Under the hood, the Audi A5 E-Hybrid PHEV pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, offering two power levels: 295 hp or a beefier 362 hp. The less powerful version hits 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, while the stronger one does it in 5.1 seconds. Both are electronically limited to 155 mph.

One of the biggest upgrades is the new 25.9 kWh battery, which supports 11 kW charging. That means a full charge from empty takes just 2.5 hours. Audi also equips the A5 PHEV with standard quattro all-wheel drive and lets drivers adjust the regenerative braking using the steering wheel paddles.

The new Audi A5 E-Hybrid PHEV arrives in an increasingly competitive segment. Mercedes’ older C300e still claims a slightly better electric range at 71 miles, though it’s slower to 62 mph at 6.2 seconds. Even the new plug-in Volkswagen Tiguan, which is bulkier and less aerodynamic, manages up to 77 miles on electric power.

The Audi A5 E-Hybrid PHEV goes on sale in Europe at the end of March, starting at €62,500 for the lower-powered sedan. And this is just the beginning—Audi has several more PHEV models coming, including electrified versions of the A6 and Q5 before the end of 2025.
