Acura Turned the MDX Type S Into a Stylish Weekend Overlander
by AutoExpert | 21 April, 2026
Acura and SEMA took a more balanced approach here. Instead of going all-out, they started with the MDX Type S and explored how much off-road gear you can add without losing everyday comfort.
The result is a one-off that keeps its core identity as a sporty luxury SUV but adds enough equipment to handle a weekend trip off the grid.

The changes are easy to spot. Bronze 18-inch Black Rhino wheels with Falken WildPeak all-terrain tires give it a tougher look and some extra grip. There is a Baja Designs light bar up front and, at the back, a tire carrier with a jerry can. It looks equipped, even if it is not meant for serious off-road use.
On the roof, there is a Prinsu rack with an Overland Stargazer Duo tent. It is made from carbon fiber and aluminum to keep weight down and fits two people, so it is more suited for short trips than long overland journeys.

Underneath, it keeps the 3.0-liter turbo V6 with 355 hp and 479 Nm, paired with a 10-speed automatic and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. So it still drives like a normal MDX Type S, just with more grip from the tires.
This is not meant to be a serious off-roader. It is more of a test idea. A way to show you can add some extra capability and gear without making the car harder to live with every day.
