The Eclipse Is Back Again, and It’s Still Not a Sports Car
by AutoExpert | 10 June, 2026
The Eclipse name keeps drifting further away from the sporty coupe people actually remember. First, Mitsubishi used it on the Eclipse Cross crossover, and now it’s coming back again on an electric SUV called the Eclipse Sportback. Underneath, though, this is basically a redesigned Nissan Leaf wearing Mitsubishi badges.
The new EV will arrive in North America as a 2027 model, and while Mitsubishi gave it its own front and rear styling, the connection to the latest Leaf is impossible to miss. Up front, there’s a reshaped bumper, a different grille design, and some extra aero detailing. Along the sides, the fastback crossover shape carries over almost unchanged, right down to the 18-inch aero wheels borrowed from the Leaf S+.

At the rear, Mitsubishi made a few more changes with a different tailgate, revised bumper, and custom LED taillight graphics. Still, nobody is mistaking this thing for a revival of the old Eclipse coupe. The entire vibe is much more “efficient family EV” than “turbocharged tuner car.”

Mitsubishi hasn’t shown the cabin yet, but the Nissan version offers either dual 12.3-inch or 14.3-inch displays, depending on trim. Features like the panoramic electrochromic roof and Bose headrest speakers may also carry over, although the company hasn’t confirmed details yet.

Underneath, the Eclipse Sportback rides on the same CMF-EV platform shared with the Nissan Leaf and Ariya. Buyers will likely get a choice between 52 kWh and 75 kWh battery packs along with either 174 hp or 214 hp from a single electric motor setup. Nissan says the range can reach up to 303 miles, so the Mitsubishi version should land somewhere close to that.

More details and pricing will arrive closer to launch later this year. Mitsubishi also confirmed an off-road-focused Outlander variant is coming in 2027, alongside new or heavily updated models arriving every year through 2030.
