2026 Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet Spotted Testing With Soft-Top Roof
by AutoExpert | 5 December, 2025
Mercedes teased a new G-Class Cabriolet a while back with half-lit images that basically tell you nothing. Now we finally get a better look. Three camouflaged photos. A roof you can actually see. Something real to point at instead of squinting at shadows.
The test cars are already running around Austria, which makes sense - that’s home turf for the G-Wagen. After that, they’re heading up to Sweden for winter testing. If a soft-top G is supposed to keep the family’s “unstoppable” reputation, it has to survive ice, snow, and whatever other misery Mercedes throws at it. And then the press release ends with a pretty hilarious “future details will be available in the future.” Thanks, we guess.

From what we can see, this prototype isn’t an AMG. No quad pipes. No angry styling. Just a regular G wearing camo. But Mercedes also calls it a “special edition,” which usually means two things: limited numbers and a price tag that makes accountants sweat. The engine is almost certainly the 3.0-liter turbo straight-six with around 443 hp. Enough power to move the thing, but honestly, performance is not why anyone buys a G Cabrio. This is a roof-down, look-at-me car, and Mercedes knows it.
The roof is a soft top with a skinny letterbox rear window. Because of that, the third brake light got moved to the spare tire carrier, which looks odd at first but actually fits the vibe once you notice it. Interior details? Nothing yet.

As for timing, don’t rush. Winter testing hasn’t started, so the finished version won’t appear until 2026. Maybe early in the year, if everything goes smoothly. And if you’re wondering whether Mercedes has ever done something like this before, absolutely.
The G has had open-top versions since 1979. A Popemobile variant in 1980. Manual roofs, then fancy ones. The last Cabrio was axed in 2013, and Americans never got one - not officially, anyway. Brabus and a few custom shops tried their own, but this is the first time in years Mercedes is doing it properly again. This time, it looks like it’ll be sold worldwide. Finally.
