This Rare Spyker C8 Just Sold for Ferrari Money

Few supercars have ever looked quite like the Spyker C8. The car helped put the small Dutch brand on the map and quickly stood out in a world dominated by Italian, British, and German exotics. Even today, there’s still nothing quite like it.
Over the years, the C8 has quietly become a collector's favorite. Part of that comes down to its aircraft-inspired design, part to its rarity, and part to the fact that nothing else really looks or feels like one. A recent auction result shows just how desirable they've become.

This particular car was a 2006 C8 Laviolette Widebody finished in red, a color so rare that only two examples were ever built. With just 2,000 miles on the odometer, it recently sold on Bring a Trailer for $670,000. That's serious money for a car that once lived in the shadow of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches.

Interestingly, it didn't even start life as a Laviolette. Spyker originally built it as a Spyder before converting it into a coupe in 2007. The car remains largely original today, aside from a few later-model updates such as LED taillights and Spyker's distinctive four-spoke propeller-style steering wheel. Those changes were carried out by renowned Spyker specialist Jasper den Dopper.

Open the door, and you're greeted by one of the most memorable interiors ever put in a road car. Exposed metal, aircraft-inspired switchgear, quilted leather, and polished aluminum seem to cover every surface. Power comes from Audi's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 producing 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

The timing is interesting, too. Although Spyker effectively disappeared years ago, the company has once again been talking about a return. Reports suggest it plans to reappear at Monterey Car Week with the long-promised C8 Preliator, powered by an 800-hp twin-turbo V8. Spyker may be gone for now, but collectors clearly haven't stopped paying attention.
