Why Drum Brakes Are Making a Comeback on New EVs

Remember drum brakes? Those unsexy, hidden braking systems nobody wanted to show off? Well, they're quietly making a comeback in the electric vehicle world.
Back in the day, four-wheel disc brakes became the hot new thing. Car companies loved advertising them, and high-performance brands like Porsche started dressing them up with flashy colors and materials. Meanwhile, poor drum brakes got relegated to the rear axles of budget cars, usually hidden from sight and forgotten.

But times are changing. Several new EVs, including Volkswagen's ID models and the Fiat 500e, are now sporting drum brakes again. And there's good reason for it.
EVs rely heavily on regenerative braking, where the electric motor slows the car while generating electricity. This means traditional friction brakes get used much less often – mainly for holding the vehicle when stopped or during emergency braking situations.
Continental, a major parts supplier, points out that modern drum brakes actually offer several advantages for EVs. They last longer, produce less brake dust, and stay protected from water, salt, and dirt inside their enclosed housing. They also require less maintenance and can operate more efficiently in harsh climates.

So while flashy disc brakes might still get all the attention, those humble drum brakes might just be the smarter choice for the electric future. Sometimes old tech turns out to be the perfect solution for new problems.
