Top Safety Rated Small SUVs of 2025: Family-Friendly and Secure
by AutoExpert | 9 April, 2025
Looking for a small SUV that'll keep you and your family protected? Good news - there's a bunch of crossovers crushing it in the safety department this year.
The safety experts have been hard at work putting these vehicles through their paces. IIHS even toughened up their standards again (they do this every year, honestly), focusing more on protecting backseat passengers and making sure these cars don't mow down pedestrians.

Ford's electric Mustang Mach-E is still killing it safety-wise. The BlueCruise hands-free system got better this year too, which is pretty cool if you hate highway driving. Fun ride, decent cargo space, but man, it charges about as fast as my phone from 2015.

Genesis has really stepped up their game. The GV60 looks like something from the future but protects you like a tank. The GV70 is back on top after a weird slip last year. These Korean luxury rides feel expensive inside and drive even better, though you'll be visiting the gas station pretty often in the non-electric versions.

The little Honda HR-V proves you don't need a big vehicle to stay safe. It's not exactly quick - honestly, it's kinda slow - but it's built solid and rides nice. All the emergency braking and lane-keeping stuff comes standard too.
Hyundai's doing safety right with both gas and electric options. The Ioniq 5 charges faster than a Tesla (finally someone does!), while the Tucson looks wild from every angle and has room for days inside. They added this creepy-but-useful camera that watches your face to make sure you're paying attention to the road.

Lexus, Mazda, and Mercedes are bringing safety with a side of luxury. The NX dropped down a peg in ratings but added some nice standard features. Mazda's twins - the CX-30 and CX-50 - feel way more premium than their price tags suggest. And the Mercedes GLC is, well, a Mercedes - plush, quiet, and packed with tech.

Subaru's still Subaru-ing along with their safety focus. The fresh-faced Forester got upgraded cameras and sensors this year, while the all-electric Solterra combines tree-hugger power with go-anywhere capability. Classic Subaru move.

Bottom line? Whether you've got Tesla money or Honda budget, there's a small SUV out there that'll protect you without being a total snoozefest to drive.
