The Real Florida Man Story: Speeding Tickets Are the State's Most Common Traffic Violation
by AutoExpert | 18 November, 2025
Florida has built an entire reputation on bizarre police blotter stories — the kind that start with “Florida man…” and instantly make everyone buckle up for chaos. But behind all the wild headlines and viral mugshots, the traffic violation Floridians get busted for the most is actually pretty boring:
Speeding. Lots and lots of speeding.
In 2024, Florida officers wrote almost 1.9 million tickets statewide. Out of those, more than 744,000 were just for speeding — by far the biggest slice of the pie. The runner-up, red-light camera violations, didn’t even come close.

Why it matters
Florida uses a point system, so every speeding ticket adds up. A few too many and suddenly a driver’s license goes on vacation:
12 points in a year = 30-day suspension
18 points in 18 months = 3-month suspension
24 points in 3 years = 1-year suspension
You don’t have to be a “Florida Man” to find yourself in trouble — just a little heavy on the gas pedal.
Some counties are speeding hotspots
The whole state isn’t equally ticket-happy. A handful of counties account for nearly half the citations.
Miami-Dade, Florida’s biggest county, saw the biggest pile of tickets — almost 94,000 in 2024, jumping way up from previous years. Lee County had the biggest spike overall, up a whopping 135% since 2022.
Statewide, speeding violations climbed 5.6% in a single year.

And the fines? They add up fast
Florida’s penalties scale with how far over the limit someone is:
6–9 mph over → about $129
10–14 mph over → around $204
15–19 mph over → about $249
20–29 mph over → roughly $274
30+ mph over → automatic court date
50+ mph over → now considered a criminal offense, with possible jail time

So yes, Florida has plenty of out-there stories — but the thing drivers get nailed for the most is the same thing people do everywhere: pressing the gas just a little too hard.
