This “E-Bike” Goes 33 MPH and Feels More Like a Moped

The Olto is one of those things that sits in a weird spot and kind of owns it.
Officially, it is a Class 2 e-bike. In real life, it feels much closer to a small electric moped. It weighs 175 lb and can hit 33 mph, even more on a downhill. That e-bike label is what keeps it simple to buy and ride. Call it a motorcycle, and suddenly you are dealing with licenses, insurance, and a lot more rules.

For $3,495, you get quite a bit. A 48V system, a 25 Ah removable battery, and a 2 kW rear hub motor. Then there is all the extra stuff. NFC unlock, GPS tracking, anti-theft alerts, automatic steering lock, USB-C charging, and over-the-air updates. It feels more like a connected device than a basic bike.

What makes it interesting is how it changes depending on the mode. In Class 2, it behaves like a normal e-bike with a 20 mph limit. Switch to Class 3 and it goes up to 28 mph with pedal assist. Off-road mode unlocks 33 mph, and some tests have seen around 36 mph. The app can even tweak settings based on local laws, which gives it a bit of flexibility depending on where you are.

Range is about 40 miles. That covers most daily use without thinking too much about it. Commuting, errands, short trips across the city. If the battery runs out, pedaling something this heavy will not be fun, so charging becomes part of the routine. The upside is you can take the battery inside, while the bike stays outside with its weatherproof build and built-in security.

It also leans into everyday use. You can add a kid carrier, storage bins, baskets, and racks. It starts to feel less like a toy and more like something you actually rely on.
So it comes down to how you use it. If it replaces car trips, it makes a lot of sense. If it just sits around for the occasional ride, it might feel like overkill.
