Maserati MC12: The Underappreciated Ferrari-Beating Race Car
by AutoExpert | 12 June, 2025
The Maserati MC12 deserves way more credit than it gets. This racing beast packed a 6-liter Ferrari V12 cranking out over 600 naturally-aspirated horses, wrapped in Frank Stephenson's stunning design that still looks futuristic today. And the sound? Pure automotive poetry that puts most modern race cars to shame.
Built on the same bones as Ferrari's legendary Enzo, the MC12 was actually the better track weapon - longer, lower, wider, and more aerodynamically slippery. Ferrari wasn't thrilled about being outdone by their sister brand, so they handicapped the Maserati with a 7,500 RPM redline instead of the Enzo's 8,000 RPM limit. This knocked 12 mph off the top speed, capping it at 205 mph.

Not that it mattered much. The MC12 dominated GT racing for years, snagging six consecutive FIA GT championships and racking up 40 wins from 94 races - a seriously impressive batting average. Only 50 road cars and 12 race versions ever existed, making it one of the rarest homologation specials ever built.

Track Day Heaven
A recent video from Spa-Francorchamps shows three MC12 GT1s stretching their legs alongside some seriously exotic machinery. watching these Maseratis chase a Bugatti Bolide through Eau Rouge is pure automotive theater. There's even a period-correct Saleen S7 GT1 adding some American muscle to the European symphony.
The MC12 raced from 2004 through 2010, and twenty years later, it still looks as fresh as anything rolling off a modern assembly line. For a car that was basically told it couldn't be better than its Ferrari cousin, the MC12 sure proved everyone wrong on track.

It's wild that this championship-winning machine isn't talked about more often. Maybe it's time to give the MC12 the respect it earned the hard way - by winning races.
