Are Luxury Electric Sedans Dying Out? Why SUVs Are Winning
by AutoExpert | 16 April, 2025
The luxury EV sedan market finds itself at a crossroads these days. While Tesla's Model S kicked off the modern electric revolution over 13 years ago, the segment seems to be losing steam as SUVs dominate consumer preferences.
Legacy Brands Playing Catch-Up
Traditional automakers have approached the challenge differently. BMW opted for a shared platform strategy, creating vehicles like the i7 and i5 that look nearly identical to their gas-powered siblings. This approach makes business sense but leads to design compromises and some rather ungainly results.

Mercedes took the opposite route with its EQS and EQE models, creating distinctive "one bow" streamlined designs that bear little resemblance to their conventional counterparts. While ambitious, these models often come across as awkwardly proportioned despite their impressive aerodynamics.

Porsche's Taycan strikes a more successful balance, extending the family look while creating something distinctly modern. The same platform underpins Audi's stylish e-tron GT, with both vehicles maintaining their brand identities while embracing electric architecture.

The Newcomer Advantage
Lucid, unburdened by legacy design constraints, created the Air with subtle elegance and cohesive proportions. As a fresh brand, they've built their visual identity from scratch, often with more successful results than established manufacturers trying to evolve their existing language.

Sedans Taking a Back Seat
The bigger story, however, is how the market has shifted toward SUVs across all powertrain types. Cadillac is focusing almost exclusively on electric SUVs, while Lexus and Acura offer just one crossover EV each.

Despite early enthusiasm and significant investment, luxury EV sedans haven't achieved the success manufacturers hoped for. The question remains: will this initial foray into electric sedans be their last, or can these sleek four-doors find their place in an increasingly SUV-dominated landscape?
