5 Annoying Driving Habits That Cause Accidents
by AutoExpert | 14 January, 2026
Some people are annoying in traffic without even realizing it. Others? They know they’re doing something wrong and just don’t care. Either way, here are five things drivers do that make everyone around them want to scream into the steering wheel.
1. Leaving your brights on like it’s a spotlight show
Yes, high beams are helpful. On a dark road, sure. But when someone forgets to turn them off—or doesn’t care—it’s like being hit in the face with a flashlight. The worst is when they’re behind you, lighting up your entire interior like a haunted house. If your brights are on and there are other cars anywhere nearby, turn them off. It’s not that deep.

2. Camping out in the left lane
The left lane isn’t a cruise lane. It’s not for your peaceful drive at exactly the speed limit. It’s for passing. That’s it. If you're just sitting there, side-by-side with someone in the right lane, you're holding up the world. Also: yes, it’s illegal in a bunch of states. But more importantly, it’s just wildly inconsiderate.
3. Tailgating like it’s going to make traffic move
Riding someone’s bumper doesn’t make them go faster. It just stresses them out, makes you look like a jerk, and increases the likelihood of a crash. Bonus points if you’re in a giant SUV with LED headlights basically burning a hole in their mirror. Worst of all? People who tailgate then brake constantly, creating that wonderful accordion effect that slows down traffic for miles.

4. Slamming the brakes to “teach someone a lesson”
Brake-checking isn’t a flex. It’s dangerous. If someone’s tailgating you, brake-checking them won’t make them a better driver—it’ll just get you rear-ended. Nobody wins. Just move over, take a breath, and let the moron go.

5. Blocking traffic to “be nice”
Stopping in the middle of the road to let someone out of a parking lot when you have the right of way? Sounds thoughtful. But it backs up everyone behind you, confuses drivers in other lanes, and can actually cause a wreck. Same with waving pedestrians across multiple lanes when traffic hasn’t stopped. Being “nice” doesn’t work when it breaks the rules everyone else is following.

Most bad driving comes from either ego or “just being helpful.” Neither belongs on the road. If more people just drove predictably and followed the damn signs, traffic would move, tempers would cool, and we’d all get home a little less angry.
