1940s Willys Jeep: Still a Mud-Slinging Off-Road Beast in 2025!
by AutoExpert | 28 May, 2025
Turns out a 1940s Willys Jeep can still have a blast crawling over rocks and through mud in 2025. Who knew that a skinny-tired metal bathtub on wheels could still be this much fun?
A couple of YouTubers from the BigTime channel recently picked up one of these WWII-era machines at auction and decided to see what all the fuss was about. What they found was basically the granddaddy of recreational off-roading - these things created the hobby when returning soldiers started taking their surplus military rides out for weekend adventures.
Back in the day, over 600,000 of these were built for the war effort, which meant plenty of cheap surplus units floating around afterward. In a time when sports cars were practically unicorns in America, a Willys was pretty much the best way to have four-wheeled fun.
Still Cheap, Still Capable
Today, a vintage Willys MB might be one of the most affordable ways to get into classic vehicle ownership. Sure, a modern side-by-side would absolutely smoke it in any head-to-head competition, but there's something special about driving a piece of history that looks this cool.

The old "Go Devil" engine only made 54 horsepower, but it had enough torque to climb just about anything - or rip a tree out by its roots if needed. Combined with super-low four-wheel drive gearing and weighing just 2,300 pounds, these things could go places that would surprise people.
Jerry and Jobe spent 23 minutes figuring out what to actually do with their auction find. They quickly learned it's not meant for highway driving, but as a beach cruiser, errand runner, or mild trail rig? Perfect.
The whole experience was convincing enough that they're seriously considering keeping it around permanently. And honestly, after watching them have this much fun with an 80-year-old machine, it's hard not to want one too.
