This Toyota Tacoma Looks Ready For Mars With 40-Inch Tires And Portal Axles
by AutoExpert | 3 November, 2026
Some Tacoma owners add bigger wheels or a lift kit and call it a day. Mountain Yotas had a rather different plan. Its latest creation takes Toyota's mid-size pickup and turns it into a full-blown off-road machine, complete with 40-inch tires, portal axles, and a rooftop tent.
The truck will appear at SEMA 2026, where it is likely to attract plenty of attention. Its custom wrap mixes black, white, gray, and orange, with matching beadlock wheels from Nick Hughes' design. The wheels are wrapped in 40-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Boss R/T tires, giving the Tacoma a much bigger footprint.

There's plenty going on underneath, too. Mountain Yotas installed 74Weld portal axles, Fox Factory Race Series DSC Evo shocks, billet control arms, and a Hardblock 4x4 front locker. The suspension setup is built for serious off-road use, although the Fox shocks alone cost more than $6,000.
The front bumper has been replaced with a steel brush guard, skid plate, LED driving lights and a winch. The bed now serves as a camping spot, thanks to a large rooftop tent. Add the extra ground clearance and those oversized tires, and this Tacoma looks ready for a long trip far away from paved roads.

Power comes from Toyota's familiar turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Mountain Yotas hasn't confirmed the exact version, meaning output could be either 228 or 278 hp. A MagnaFlow exhaust and K&N intake are also part of the package.
The cabin hasn't been forgotten. Black leather seats feature orange inserts, matching stitching, and topographical map patterns.

Mountain Yotas built this Tacoma to show just how far it can push a customer's ideas. The truck is a one-off, but it gives a good look at what's possible when the standard Tacoma simply isn't enough.
