When A Hilux Borrows Fortuner DNA: A Custom Build To Remember

A Hilux owner in Malaysia decided to breathe new life into their older truck by giving it a striking modern makeover. The result? A custom conversion that replaces the Hilux's original face with the bold front end of a Toyota Fortuner.

For those unfamiliar, the Toyota Fortuner is a three-row SUV built on the same ladder-frame platform as the Toyota Hilux. This shared DNA makes the transformation not only imaginative but also surprisingly feasible. While the Fortuner is designed as an SUV and the Hilux as a pickup, their similar dimensions—aside from the Hilux’s longer wheelbase—allowed for a seamless fit.

This particular project was based on a seventh-generation Toyota Hilux, which was in production from 2004 to 2015. The skilled hands at One Auto Concept Garage in Malaysia handled the retrofit, outfitting the Hilux with a complete Fortuner-inspired front end.

The makeover includes a new bumper, grille, hood, front fenders, and sleek LED headlights from the Fortuner. The sharper styling elements lend the truck a more modern and aggressive look, complemented by a carbon-style vented hood and a set of aftermarket wheels. This specific Toyota Hilux even sports a lowered stance.

The Toyota Hilux has also upgraded its rear section, incorporating design cues from the eighth-generation Hilux. The newer rear fenders, LED taillights, sculpted tailgate, and redesigned bumper give the truck a cohesive, contemporary appearance. The deep black paint job with matching accents ties it all together, resulting in a more sinister, high-end aesthetic.

As for what’s under the hood, that’s a bit of a mystery. It’s unclear if this custom Hilux received any performance upgrades to back up its bold new look or if it retains its stock powertrain. Either way, this one-off creation is a head-turner and a testament to what’s possible when creativity meets craftsmanship.
