This 2002 Lada Niva Has Tractor Tires And Can Drive Through Swamps

Forget shiny SUVs with fancy off-road modes. The Lada Niva Marsh was built for a much simpler reason: getting through places where ordinary cars have absolutely no business going. Based on the familiar Russian 4x4, this bizarre machine wears enormous low-pressure tires and has been modified to tackle mud, deep snow, and waterlogged terrain. Now, a restored example from 2002 is for sale in Germany for €19,999 (around $22,400).
Those tires are impossible to miss. They look comically large against the little Niva, but they serve a serious purpose.

Their low pressure helps spread the vehicle’s weight across soft ground, reducing the risk of sinking. The body has been cut to make room for them, with huge fender extensions and built-in mud flaps. Finished in purple, this particular Marsh looks like something you’d unlock in an off-road video game.
The modifications go well beyond the wheels. Bull bars protect both ends, rectangular headlights replace the original round units, and custom axles and suspension give the chassis the hardware needed for its unusual job. Fewer than 1,000 examples are believed to exist, which makes a restored one a rare find. The cabin, however, is still very much old-school Niva, with a basic dashboard and Bronto branding on the steering wheel and bucket seats.

Under the hood, there’s no monster engine to match the monster tires. The Marsh uses a naturally aspirated 1.7-liter four-cylinder producing just 79 hp, paired with low-range gearing. That might sound painfully slow, but this machine isn’t built for overtaking on the highway. Its job is to crawl across terrain that would leave many conventional 4x4s buried up to their axles.
According to the seller, this example has been professionally restored, which helps explain the €19,999 asking price. It’s hardly cheap for a 2002 Lada, but you’re not paying for an ordinary Niva here. You’re paying for a rare Russian mud-plugger that looks ridiculous on a city street.
