Mitsubishi Just Turned the Family-Friendly Outlander Into a Much Tougher Trail SUV
by AutoExpert | 29 October, 2026
Most Mitsubishi Outlanders spend their lives doing school runs, grocery trips, and the occasional family holiday. The new Diamond Trail Edition, however, looks like it has other plans. Unveiled ahead of next week's SEMA Show, this tougher Outlander gets off-road upgrades and a meaner look.
Mitsubishi calls it the most capable Outlander sold in North America, and it seems the brand wants to remind everyone that SUVs can do more than climb a shopping mall parking ramp.

The makeover starts with a matte black grille, darkened headlights, chunky all-terrain tires, and black 18-inch wheels. New front and rear bumpers also improve its approach angles, while a new Trail Green Metallic paint job makes it look ready to disappear into the woods.
Two modified concepts will also appear at SEMA. The more extreme one gets a 2.5-inch lift, Method Race wheels, BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, a rooftop tent, traction boards, and enough extra lighting to make nighttime camping feel like a stadium event. The second build is a little more relaxed, with a smaller lift, aftermarket lights, and a roof rack carrying two mountain bikes. Because apparently, one hobby isn't enough.

Inside, the 2028 Mitsubishi Outlander swaps glossy black trim for matte black and dark metallic finishes. Water-repellent dark grey seats with khaki stitching add a practical touch, along with special Diamond Trail Edition logos. Under the hood, things stay familiar: a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine with mild-hybrid assistance delivers 174 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque.
The real mechanical upgrade is the revised all-wheel-drive system, which gains a Rock mode to help find grip on rough ground. Hill Descent Control also lends a hand, while improved camera functionality makes it easier to see what's happening around the SUV at low speeds.

Mitsubishi will also bring its rally-winning Triton, the Delica D:5 Ultimate Gear van, and the Outlander Sport Trail Edition to SEMA. Clearly, Mitsubishi has adventure on its mind.
